Benjamin Cohen

Benjamin Cohen is a certified and registered Sofer STaM/Baal Mageah with studios on Har Bracha, Israel and in Brooklyn, NY. He has been a professional calligrapher for over 25 years and served as the chief calligrapher for the Jewish National Fund for close a decade. Certified as a sofer in 1992, he received certification as a Baal Mageah (master scribe/proofreader) in 2002 from Machon le'STam--Vaad Mishmeres STaM. In addition, he has been registered with the Jerusalem Rabbinate.

An experienced teacher, Benjamin Cohen has taught Industrial Arts, calligraphy, technical skills, and printing technologies to students of varying ages. Educational session keep both youngsters and adults mesmerized with well-planned and orderly hands-on experiences. Through his years of calligraphic experience he learned to match any handwriting, in Hebrew or in Latin letters, leading to seamless repairs, and because of his organization experience can be an asset to any fundraising campaign.

Benjamin Cohen's family first came to the Holy Land in 1772, and several generations of the family have dedicated themselves to the scribal arts. His grandfather, great-uncles, and great-grandfathers were all scribes of the highest caliber. Avram Aaron Segal, one of his great- grandfathers, taught many of Jerusalem's finest soferim. Eliezer David HaCohen, another of his great-grandfathers, was a graduate of the Kaiser's school for scribes in Austria and a sofer as well. His grandfather Menachem Azariah Cohen, and great-uncle Pinchas Cohen served as Soferim in US and Canadian communities for many years, and his great-uncle Yisroel Yehosha HaCohen was admired by old Jerusalem's scholars for his fine hand. Benjamin continues the family tradition of serving the Jewish community with his knowledge and skill.
